Plasmodium vivax male gametocyte in thick film. Male gametocyte (microgametocyte) has pink to purple chromatin fibrils surrounded by a pale halo and then blue cytoplasm and abundant brown granules throughout. The cytoplasm of the female gametocyte is darker than the male and the chromatin forms a compact peripheral mass with brown pigment round the periphery. Gametocytes appear in the blood 3-5 days after the start of the parasitaemia. This gametocyte looks somewhat smaller than you would expect with P.vivax but it is because it is in a thick film and so not as flattened as it would be in the area of ideal thickness of a thin film.
